Maybe a third of Americans make no distinction between -e- and -i- in
front of a nasal sound:

  igh_front_vowels#Pin.E2.80.93pen_merger>

Most of my coworkers in Southern California pronounced "pin" and "pen"
identically even though the map doesn't reveal that. Same with "Linux"
and "Lennox", and "hymn" and "hem".
