Re: AmphetaDesk (Score: 0)

I looked forward to using this app and installed it on my Win machine, only to run into trouble as soon as tried to change the default browser from IE to Opera. AmphetaDesk generated an error message and shut down every time I launched it, even when I tried to change the browser back to IE. I'm sure the fault is my own, but since the app is not easy to customize, it is not easy to use, especially since I avoid using IE whenever possible.

AmphetaDesk lasted less than a day on my machine. If someone has tips for making this work under Opera for Windows, feel free to e-mail me at walt_h@myrealbox.com.

I got amphetadesk up and running last night on Debian unstable and it works. I would rate the installation about a seven on a scale of 1 - 10 in terms of difficulty, mostly due to the Perl. I never had to write in for help, though. A 1 would be "apt-get install amphetadesk". So far it is the exact solution for my needs, and is able to process all of the feeds I have thrown at it. One "clue" (for me anyway) is use the moreover.com feeds and change the "o=" option to rss. ie.
http://www.moreover.com/cgi-local/page?o=rss&c=Iraq%20news

I have yet to do two important things:
1) close and restart amphetadesk to see if it saves settings (plus I installed it in the /tmp directory because I thought I was compiling a binary
2) access it from outside my computer (basically I can view my webpage hosted on my home PC and want to also be able to access my feeds from work!)
So far I am giving Amphetadesk an 8.5 out of 10 and letting everyone know that yes it does work for Linux.
