For one, it is a free open-source project while Opera is a purchased product... Opera is supposed to be feature laden, hence the better download tools.
Isn't this apologetic? Why is it okay for a product that is often championed as an excellent example of open source development to not be feature laden - because it's open sourced? I thought the whole point of open sourced development is to develop vastly superior products by using the knowledge and skills of the whole developer community. What you're saying is totally in contrast of it. Instead, you seem to be stating that open source's only strength is that it's free.
Freedom and lack of standards is it's point.
Isn't this one of the main reason why open sourced products have yet to take root on the desktop? There are simply too many fractured versions of different products. However, I don't think this is a good thing. Open standards are a good thing. Open sourced advocates constantly base Microsoft for not following standards, yet it seems that we aren't either - because we actively choose not to come up with them. This may be good for developers, people can just fork when they grow disenchanted with projects, but it's a nightmare for end users. If there are no end users, do programming projects matter?
