Regarding startup times, IE has the slight advantage of being mostly loaded already before you start it, since it's far too integrated into the OS for its own good. I know that for Mozilla, there was an option to "pre-load" the browser by adding a loader application that starts when you log in to your computer. Perhaps something like this is / will be available for FireFox too.

If by "primary alternative browser" you mean IE, that's because IE is essentially loaded at boot time. As with most MS applications, it's essentially part of the OS, and so it does load quickly.
I second your recommendation. Around 0.5 or so, I had problems with Phoenix (or whatever it was called back then), but now it's much more reliable than IE or Mozilla 1.x. It's only crashed on me maybe twice in 4 months or so, and it's quick. Occasionally I have to use IE for a particular page (a local radio station streams through WMP, but you need IE to launch and am shocked at how annoying pop-up ads are and that I put up with them for so long.

The quick-loading option can be enabled like this:
- Type about:config in Firefox's address bar
- Browse to the browser.turbo.enabled setting
- Set its value to true.
