Hi all,
our team researched this, and looks like on iOS the user must initiate playback :
http://developer.apple.com/library/safari/#documentation/AudioVideo/Conceptual/Using_HTML5_Audio_Video/AudioandVideoTagBasics/AudioandVideoTagBasics.html

"Warning: To prevent unsolicited downloads over cellular networks at the user’s expense, embedded media cannot be played automatically in Safari on iOS—the user always initiates playback. A controller is automatically supplied on iPhone or iPod touch once playback in initiated, but for iPad you must either set the controls attribute or provide a controller using _javascript_."

IMHO this makes sense given that usage billing is typical on mobile networks nowadays. I've contacted our friends over at Apple to see if there is any flexibility to relax this restriction for WiFi video playback.
Thanks,Jarek

[YouTube-API] Re: fmt=22 fmt=37 in url doesn't work anymore?

Hello, Are you talking about a URL like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5ebSn9HgJ4 First off, that's really not part of the YouTube API. All of this is YouTube.com watch page details, and is subject to change at whim. Don't expect things that used to work to continue working indefinitely. That being said, the default player size on those pages right now has a height of 360px, so it makes no sense to request a 480p transcode of the video. It will just end up being scaled down by the Flash runtime to fit the player. If you click on the little UI widget to grow the default player to be 480px of height, then the player will automatically switch to the 480p transcode for you. I think there's some sort of cookie or session variable that gets saved when you expand the player so that subsequent visits to watch pages will also default to 480p. But I am not aware of any URL parameter to force that by default. You can ignore my question below - I had mis-read your original post and thought this applied to tapping the play button.
