There is no real need to fake the EDID. The EDID is only used to make monitor 
configuration easier, without EDID the drivers fall back to the Monitor section 
of your xorg.conf. You just have to specify HorizSync / VertRefresh in it and X 
should work fine. If you want you can also add some custom modelines.
