RE: Connecting SDK to pocket pc: msg#00069windows.ce.devel
David, Good idea - you are on the "on-ramp" to the wonderful world of network debugging. Let me see if I (or others on this list) can help you get things moving. Re: Latest Service Pack SP4 is the latest (link is below), but you can get by with SP3. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4a4ed1f4-91d3-4 dbe-986e-a812984318e5&displaylang=en Re: Wireless versus Wired For what it's worth, I used to think that getting a wireless connection was somehow more difficult than a wired one. Okay, I was wrong. Whenever I got things working with a wired connection first (or wireless first), then the other was no problem. I guess this is another way of saying that layer-1 is the easiest thing to address. Re: ActiveSync and Network Security If you are using the latest version of ActiveSync (4.0), then I believe an ActiveSync connection over the network is not supported. This is because it introduces security holes. Re: Okay, so what do I do already?!? 1) Establish ActiveSync connection (via USB) 2) Establish ActiveSync Partnership 3) Desktop -- make sure to set Connection Settings... to allow LAN connections 4) Device-Side -- same thing. In ActiveSync application, browse through the various dialog boxes to make sure that you have enabled a network connection. 5) Device -- run Internet Explorer and make sure that your network connection is up. Enter a URL --- either on the Internet or on a local Intranet. 6) If no network connection, check your network driver (Settings->Connections) 7) Desktop -- you might need to tweak the Platform Manager configuration. In eVC: -- Select menu item Tools->Configure Platform Manager... -- Select device name (Pocket PC 2003 Device). -- Click on [Properties...] button -- Check that both Transport and Startup Server say "Microsoft ActiveSync" -- ...and if that doesn't work, try futzing with other values. Note that you can click the [Test] button to check whether your settings helped. Re: One weird thing Here is something that is weird that I remember that I encountered a long time ago. It seemed that having the USB cable *connected* while making the network connection was helpful in earlier versions of WinMO (Pocket PC 2003). However -- just the opposite is true with WinMo 5.0. That is, the USB connection (especially with Passthrough enabled) kept you from making a network connection via wireless (especially GPRS/EDGE). The reason, it seems, is that the (ever-so-smart) Connection Manager wants to save you money. Note -- this is true even if your machine has a network card, but no connection to the Internet! Re: DHCP Server Present? One thing I did not ask about is whether both desktop and device are getting their IP addresses from a DHCP server. I have been assuming "yes", but if not -- then you need to establish a static IP address for both, and put the IP addresses in the same sub-domain (For example, 10.0.0.100 for your device and 10.0.0.101 for your desktop). And then on your device, set the WINS Server value to be the IP address of the desktop (10.0.0.101 in the above example). Re: What's Next.... If this works -- great! Please let the list know... If *not* -- still please let the list know... Best of luck getting *off* the on-ramp and *onto* the highway. (Can you tell I just got home after going through some busy traffic....???) Best, Paul -----Original Message----- From: windowsce-dev@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:windowsce-dev@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of zzdavidp I am trying to download and debug my application to my Pocket PC (iPAQ 5550 with built-in wireless) (2003OS) via a wireless network, a wireless access point and then ethernet. I am using EVC4.0 with latest SP (I think). I can sync the Pocket PC to my desktop through this connection. I just can't seem to get a connection between the device and evc. All the platform builder settings seem to time out or lack required files. All features work fine on USB connection. Any tips? Thanks in advance Cheers David Petersen ------------------------ Yahoo!
