Subject: RE: Is there a mediator for this group?

Hi Thomas,

Can you have multiple moderators? I did think about this option but it
concerns me that if only a single person can moderate that there's the
danger that if they go on leave for a while that the list grinds to a halt.
Also, with timezone differences someone in an opposing timezone won't be
able to get a quick answer to a question.

I had to disable my ISPs spam filter. They could only configure it
site-wide and the settings caused many legitimate emails to get rejected due
to certain HTML content. I'm using a Bayesian filter which makes my 200+
spams per day much more manageable, though still tedious.

Regards,

Steven

I run a Yahoo group dedicated to NDIS developer topics at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/discussion-pcausa/

I've had it for about five years.

I encountered the worst "spam" problem during the Bush/Gore elections - then
commercial spam later.

What works for my group is to require all posts to be moderated - except for
those posted by a few members who I personally trust.

The moderation for a list with a small number of posts (less than a hundred
or so a month) is really easy. Yahoo sends an email with the post to be
moderated. To accept, just reply to the message. To ban the member, just
follow a link.

It's a little extra work, but insures no garbage hits the list.

P.S. Having a Blackberry, PDA or phone with email capability makes it
easier. Posts to be moderated come in anywhere and can be approved just by
replying to the message.

Spam is a terrible plague. I get 500 to a thousand spam a day. Many are
tossed by spam filters at my ISP, so only a hundred or so hit my inbox.

Thomas
