Compiling librep 0.16.1 with gmp support fixed this issue.

Thanks very much for all the help - it turns out the 0.16.1-r1 release
of librep from gentoo, my distribution, has gmp support in place, where
0.16.1 specifically disables it... not sure why they did that...
