IceWM in Fedora and imlib dependency: msg#00036

Subject: IceWM in Fedora and imlib dependency

Hello!

IceWM is the only package I need to compile when installing Fedora.
Even my poor cvsutils is in Fedora Extras, but IceWM is not.

I believe one of the reasons is that the current versions of IceWM don't
fall back to libXpm automatically, but fail instead when the stone age
imlib 1 cannot be found.

Fixing this problem would greatly increase chances of somebody bringing
IceWM to Fedora Extras. I don't know if refusing libXpm by default has
any intent behind it. My original configure script would fall back to
libXpm in absence of imlib. Shouldn't we restore the old behavior? I
would even suggest that libXpm becomes the default.

If libXpm is too limiting, perhaps icewm should switch to a modern image
library, such as gdk pixbuf (part of Gtk+ 2.x) and dump imlib?

Once this issue is addressed, it would be great if the IceWM developers
requested Fedora to package IceWM. It's an excellent window manager
that I've been using for many years, and it's so disappointing that it's
falling into obscurity and becoming hard to get.
