References in set() ?: msg#00089

Subject: References in set() ?

Hi!

Just a quick question if somebody can enlighten me what the code
dealing with references is doing in set() of Field.py?

I was trying to upgrade my project to a recent cvs version but run into
problems and reverted to the old version because I didn't know what it's
doing and how to fix that (either in my app or in Archetypes).

I also wrote something about this into the project wiki at

http://plone.org/development/current/projects/ArchetypesIdeas

And some more ideas came to my mind:

- what if references could contain not only the link to the referenced
object but also some other information, like a title or description
for this reference?

- as written in the wiki: It would be nice to have more than one list
of references, e.g. for different roles (like associations in UML).

- Moreover I think about some sort of versioning for these references.
I've written some storage which can hold two versions of an object,
one edited version and one public one and the problem now is that
I cannot use that to deal with references..
(but I think this might get complicated as the refs are stored outside
the object.. )

I also would like some sort of wiki where new ideas/development will
be discussed or at least logged so ppl know what's happening. If discussion
only is taking place on IRC it's not always available to everyone.
(this also refers to my problem with the reference code in set() ;-)

Any ideas about that?

regards,
Christian
