on redhat... /var/spool/mail would normally be chmod 775 - so it is not
world writable. I don't know where sendmail would spool the mail to on
OSX - it may be the same path, it may not. The db files that were
referred to in your error messages indicated that it was troubled by the
permissions on the files/folder at /etc/mail but perhaps it is troubled
only by the mail spool folder or possibly the mqueue folder
(/var/spool/mqueue) which curiously on my redhat system has permissions
of 755
