It certainly should, unless sendmail is doing something stupid and
using only DNS for IP lookups ..

mmm.... how about if the ip's are included in /etc/hosts? (and your server
is configured to look first there) does this work for reverse too?

sorry that it's more than 25 days old!.. but I have been *very* busy (and
will be again!)... and now I'm catching up with this list ;)

Hi again,
Just wondered - is the following log error for sendmail a problem I
should be trying to fix, or is it something I will autofix when I have the
proper domain & host name assigned to the machine:

gethostbyaddr(203.53.37.179) failed: 1

Just for further info, the IP address that will be assigned later
already has a number of domains pointing to it - I will be transtitioning
them via Webmin's Bind module later.

That message is not a problem - it just means that sendmail couldn't do a
reverse lookup for that IP address, which is presumably one of the network
addresses for your server. Just having a forward address record pointing to
that IP is not enough for the reverse resolution to work .. your ISP will
probably have to set that up for you.
