The SMTP protocol (go see RFC 821, from memory) is a text-based protocol
running over a TCP connection, just like FTP, HTTP and - surprise,
surprise! - telnet. What you are asking is analogous to, "Is there any way
to block cars from this private road, while still keeping it open to
cars?". . .

Re: Is this log error a a problem.

mmm.... how about if the ip's are included in /etc/hosts? (and your server is configured to look first there) does this work for reverse too? Cheers! Marcos sorry that it's more than 25 days old!.. but I have been *very* busy (and will be again!)... and now I'm catching up with this list ;) On Thu, 13 Jun 2002, Jamie Cameron wrote: > Terry Allen wrote: > > > Hi again, > > Just wondered - is the following log error for sendmail a problem I > > should be trying to fix, or is it something I will autofix when I have the > > proper domain & host name assigned to the machine: > > > > gethostbyaddr(203.53.37.179) failed: 1 > > > > Just for further info, the IP address that will be assigned later > > already has a number of domains pointing to it - I will be transtitioning > > them via Webmin's Bind module later. > > > That message is not a problem - it just means that sendmail couldn't do a > reverse lookup for that IP address, which is presumably one of the network > addresses for your server. Re: Slightly OT (maybe?)

Hw do you have telnet and sendmail using port 25? Telnet usually runs on 23, so just disable the telnet service in inetd.conf or xinetd.conf. If you mean the ability to telnet 25 when having a mailserver running, I do not belive so. Strange Sendmail Error

Hi again, This is quite bizarre - I have been beavering away & thought I had the OSX server just about right, but when I went to start sendmail just now (only found out when I looked at the status of sendmail), I get the following errors: # /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd 451 4.0.0 /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 72: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/local-host-names': World Writable Directory 451 4.0.0 /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 126: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/canonify-domains': World Writable Directory I've tried setting the permissions via chmod go-w & chown to both files & directories, but that hasn't helped. Can anybody suggest anything? I've looked around the Sendmail site, but can't see anything much related that's helped.
