I can locate the element and get focus set on the input 'box' but I cannot find a way to set/change the value. Since I can manually type in a filename and path, I would like to simulate this for some of our tests.

I think it's a scripting security issue, since _javascript_ may not be able to fill a file selection box  (if it was couple with a form submit it would enable a web page to load arbitrary files from your system !).
Can't see a simple solution for this !
Maybe security policies on firefox as discussed on a thread about it on 18/10, may resolve it. I think you shall give your site UniversalFileRead as seen on http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/components/signed-scripts.html
