That's not quite correct. Using Polipo with tor does speed up things
a lot, due to the more aggressive pipelining.

It is possible to tweak Firefox to be almost as aggressive as Polipo,
but this does not work well due to some limitations in Firefox's
support for SOCKS. I recommend using Polipo with tor.

Using Privoxy is not recommended, as Privoxy doesn't do pipelining at
all.
