Kae - do you mean in general, not just the Golden Spiders? As a
previous recipient of a Golden Spider for boards.ie, I think I can be
critical and say things have changed for the worse with those awards.
I'd hope that the forthcoming Irish Web Awards will be objective at
least. And I think the Net Visionary awards are too...
I mean in general. It would be nice to think that there are genuine
competitions out there, where the nominations are chosen by merit rather
than by self-nomination, but I have not come across any.
Admittedly, I have not looked very much, but I have not come across any
competition that I would call faintly objective and merit-based.
I must admit that we (webworks) were also considered for an award in a
past GS event, but the excitement very quickly vanished, as it was
painfully obvious that the only reason we were considered was because we
had paid to be included in the system.
I think competitions are very important, in a darwinian way, but I don't
think there is any value to be placed in a competition where the prime
requisite for being nominated is that you can pay the entrance fee.
