The style menu currently lets you specify both the tag (h1, h2, p, pre,
div, etc.) and the class to be associated with the tag. Most content
management system managers want to impose a consistent style across the
site which is why having a few predefined text styles is preferred over
letting the users specify fonts themselves.

Right, but if you select some text and specify a style for it, then unless
the text you selected is already the content of a tag we need to insert
some sort of tag to delimit the selection and by default that would be
<span>.

As I said above there is a conflict between the formatting which users want
to do, which is often based on 'pick a pretty font', and the needs of a CMS
where the styles are selected by name and can then be skinned differently
according to the required presentation. I recognise that there is also a
conflict between those people who are running a CMS for 1 or 2 'power'
users against those who are running it in a corporate environment. The
answer is probably to work on improving the ease of customisation so that
tools can be added/removed more easily on a per-installation basis.

That's why I'm working to make the initialisation code much more generic so
that it can survive tools being added or removed without needing any code
changes.
