Kupu 1.2 stripping span tags

Hi guys,

Kupu 1.2rc1 is stripping span tags from documents and I can't find why. 
I've checked the content filter and it's one of the allowed tag types, 
I've also tried commenting it out from the other special case rules but 
Kupu just strips them straight out.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
