post-XSLT whitespace

the out-of-the-box kupu templates (html documents) are quite clean...  
however just one build on my system
will insert blank lines and whitespace all over the place... which I'm  
assuming is a normal effect of the
XSL transformation, so I was wondering how you guys deal with it.
