I'm a bit confused about the PHP tidy wrapper.
I've submited a bug I've discovered to both tidy and php bug system:
http://bugs.php.net/28880
http://tidy.sf.net/bug/976839

But both said "its not our problem" :)

The command line version does not have this problem, right? So there is
a difference in how the PHP Wrapper and the command line application use
the library, right? That either means that the different behavior of the
PHP Wrapper is by design in which case your expectations are wrong and
this is indeed not a bug, or it is a bug in the PHP Wrapper. You would
need to tell us in which way Tidy misbehaves here, ideally with minimal
C code that reproduces the problem without relying on the PHP Wrapper.
Again, the command line version does not have this problem, so why do
you think this is a bug in the library?

Exactly, the command line version doesn't have this problem.

The PHP wrapper just uses the library normally, and doesn't do anything special: it just pass the html to tidy.
The problem is that if I parse a xhtml document, without specifing the 'ouput-xhtml' option, it will return HTML code (and it is even non compliant).

The tidylib should automatically check the 'doctype' of the document and then choose the type of the document automatically.

If I have some time later, I'll try to produce a minimal program to demonstrate this.

Nuno

P.S.: Tidy is a great program, I just want to help to improve it ;)
