Subject: Re: mapping widgets and OpenLayers

Thanks Brian...I think the release of OpenLayers got Dylan depressed, because someone else had been working on something similar for Dojo but hasn't come close to finishing it...

In all honesty though, the most useful part of the idea is the ability to drag a set of tiles and lazy load ones that aren't showing yet, with some sort of click to coordinate ability.  Perhaps it's something that should be actively planned for for 0.6 (or even 0.5, if someone's feeling ambititous).

The GoogleMap and YahooMap widgets are wrappers to each respective map API; there's a *lot* more to a map api than just the interface, including a lot of files and mapping information.  At some point I was planning on kicking off the beefier version of that by wrapping all the free APIs out there in a way that brings them all together (think charting for mapping); but for me at least, crypto comes first.

I've never looked at Dojo's GoogleMap and YahooMap widgets, and I don't
know anything about mapping APIs myself, so I don't know if/how
OpenLayers would fit into the picture, but I wanted to mention it.
