curl compile crashing

hi- i'm trying to compile curl and php on mac osx panther. i started with
php b/c curl was working natively and i just want php to see it. so it
errored during the make b/c i needed to update curl. downloaded and
configured curl, but i get a Segmentation failure...
gcc: Internal error: Segmentation fault (program
/usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/cpp-precomp)

i defined this env variable:
env CFLAGS="-no-cpp-precomp"

then configured again and maked but it errored the same just in a different
spot. this was the orignial before i reset the CFLAGS:
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I../include -I../lib -I../lib -g -O2 -c
hostip.c -Wp,-MD,.deps/hostip.TPlo -fno-common -DPIC -o .libs/hostip.o

i really would rather just install these two things rather than one of those
pre-set packages b/c i have no idea what they are doing to the rest of my
things. i have done too many modifications to do them and i coudn't even
find what php.ini file fink was using when i tried it, which makes it
useless to me. anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
