Just to clarify the idea a bit (cause you used the 'i' word),
the 'line' divs (not gifs, I've decided) could have (or not have)
1px borders on all four sides. All variations of the four borders
(eleven, I think) should be in the 'css library'. By selecting
the correct css for each div, opposing borders will appear to
become 2px lines, in whatever line arrangement is necessary.
Nodes could be positioned, not over the centers of the divs,
but where their corners meet meet. Any junction might hold
a node. So the nodes are not restricted to exactly one size
but might vary a bit, covering more or less of the border/lines.
They might even be linked head shots.
The grid need not be based on squares, but could be
elongated horizontally or vertically.
By simply making the divs half-size, a second tier could
be introduced, with smaller nodes, closer together. Also,
by leaving the divs transparent, blocks of nodes might be
visually grouped thru the use of underlying colored or
bordered divs.
Browser-wise, As long as a given browser can handle lots
of AP divs with assigned z-indexes, without glitches or
long rendering times, it should be visually doable.
As far as scripting these placements based on what is in the
nodes, well I know lots of buzz-words, don't I? Don't that
count for something? ;-\
