I've just noticed that the same problem (field order ignored) also affects
3:2 pulldown detection.

On a DVD which is partially encoded as progressive and partially
interlaced, the field order in the interlaced sections can be top or
bottom field first. The interlaced sections which have the top field first
work ok with the 3:2 pulldown detection. The interlaced sections which
have the bottom field first continually jump in and out of film mode (and
suffer from the deinterlacing problem mentioned above).

Presumably the merging of fields from different frames (once 3:2 pulldown
has been detected) also needs to take account of field order.
