FreeJ is an instrument for realtime manipulation of various video layers combined with live effects. Layers are implemented to mix together webcams, TV, movie files, images and text and can be rendered in various ways. FreeJ can be operated live using hotkeys, also remotely over networks (VJoE), while operations can also be scripted in a object oriented procedural language. It is optimized for responsiveness and accuracy, its asynchronous engine can accept multiple controllers (MIDI, Joystick, etc.) FreeJ is being developed in the hope to provide the GNU community with a free instrument for video manipulation: it is currently employed in video mixing desks, dance performances, veejaying, digital scenography and medical analysis. FreeJ's sourcecode is written in C, C++ and assembler, it can run on GNU/Linux and Darwin/OSX platforms, PC-x86 or Mac, and is released as free software under the GNU General Public License. :: JUICY FEATURES ___ Procedural Video Scripting (PVS) FreeJ is a scriptable engine: it can render object oriented procedural scripts written in javascript syntax. We are exploring a new frounteer of video manipulation: the evolution from linear and non-linear video editing can be right here, all free and open source, with Procedural Video Scripting. ___ VeeJay over Ethernet (VJoE) With the new S-Lang text based console you can control FreeJ from a secure shell (SSH) remote session: connect a box directly to the projector and login from the wireless network to control your visuals. Stop standing in the corner of parties talking with techies, VJoE makes *NIX geeks become the ultimate stage animals veejaying using Emacs/Vi interaction. ___ and more FreeJ can loop video clips with frame accuracy, overlay text in various ways, blend image layers using alpha channel and can be easily extended thru a simple and fairly documented C/C++ API. :: WHERE THIS ALL COMES FROM? AND WHY IS IT FREE? This software started being developed by Jaromil as a digital instrument used in dance-theater performances. Since 2001 ongoing development took inspiration from various artists and programmers: Roberto Paci Dalo', Francescopaolo Isidoro, Andreas Schiffler, Luigi Pagliarini, Kentaro Fukuchi, Isabella Bordoni, to name just a few. FreeJ is released as free software with the intention to foster creativity, artistic expression and research indypendently from proprietary business products: to avoid that commercial companies own the performability and reproducibility of our creations. JAH BLESS YOU FOR THE GOOD OF YOUR CREATIONS, THIS IS RASTA SOFTWARE! Recently Jaromil received support for FreeJ development: he was invited to publish its code in an installation for the Withney ArtPort CODeDOC (Ars Electronica 03), while during 2003/04 development is ongoin with the support of the Netherlands Institute of Media Art / Montevideo Time Based Arts. Since the end of 2003, among other contributions, a brilliant coder joined the project: Kysucix, contributing to new core features. To support development of this project, we are available to run workshops about usage, customization and reuse/abuse of FreeJ in particular circumstances; we offer as well support and warranty, development of software solutions and consulting. contact us -> http://dyne.org/hackers_contact.php :: DEVELOPMENT TEAM # Jaromil :: author and mantainer >> http://rastasoft.org # Kysucix :: layer and engine coder >> http://kysucix.nexlab.it documentation & case study has been contributed by : Anne-Marie Skriver, Marloes de Valk, Robert de Geus (NIM/Montevideo) with many thanks to the free code mates: Niel Elburg (VeeJay), Salsaman (LiVES) and Tom Schouten (PDP) for a complete list of contributions see ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/AUTHORS :: AVAILABILITY The sourcecode of FreeJ 0.7.1 is made available here ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/releases/freej-0.7.1.tar.gz RPM binary package ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/releases/freej-0.7.1-1.i386.rpm Slackware binary package ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/releases/freej-0.7.1-i386-1.tgz Debian and Gentoo will update their own packages in the near future brief instructions how to compile: ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/INSTALL and for Darwin/OSX users: ftp://ftp.dyne.org/freej/README.OSX FreeJ CVS bleeding edge public access granted http://cvs.dyne.org/viewcvs.cgi/?root=free FreeJ is also included ready for use in the live CD DYNE:BOLIC - RASTASOFT REDEMPTION SOFTWARE just burn the CD and boot it! dyne:bolic is FREE AS OF SPEECH download from http://dynebolic.org happy video hacking ;^) ciao - -- jaromil, dyne.org rasta coder, http://rastasoft.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Cryptographically signed mail, see http://gnupg.org iD8DBQFBqir/WLCC1ltubZcRAoGAAJ0ekTVXfjrPiPxvuGqk5TZWHgiYqQCfQQuH 1yGgD3IYCkKBdRInESqC6KE= =Uhet -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ piksel mailing list piksel@xxxxxx http://plot.bek.no/mailman/listinfo/piksel http://www.piksel.no |
