There is a helper program called irw in the LIRC. It should read the data 
from lircd and show it on the stdout when you press the remote control 
buttons. If this works the problem is in avview.

The table at <http://www.lirc.org/html/table.html> probably tells you if 
you need any additional modules (I'm thinking mainly lirc_dev). If you do, 
try to load them manually before starting lircd.
