I wouldn't know any other log file to look in, and I don't know where
syslog is located (at least not on Fedora Core 5).

Apparently /dev/lirc doesn't exist? I have a /dev/lircd though. I
tried linking /dev/lirc to /dev/lircd and that definitely wasn't the
solution. Any ideas?

Which version of what program are you talking about? I am using AVview
0.80.7 and LIRC 0.8.0.
