Have you tried XawTV as an alternative to avview? I don't run Debian,
but I'd be shocked if it wasn't available in .deb form. I've had good
luck with it with several Radeon cards; admittedly, all were older ones
which were already well supported by the GATOS drivers (and I wasn't
trying to record, just to view, so km wasn't a factor). I've run into a
couple of situations where XawTV worked quite well while avview didn't,
so it seems as if it'd at least be worth giving it a shot in this case.
