ON my side, I use xvattr and put the relevant command in the autostart
file of my window manager. E.g.:


$ cat GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart
#!/bin/sh

xvattr -a XV_SWITCHCRT -v 1


IN your case, you'll need to use attibutes such as XV_BRIGHTNESS. See
xvattr man page for details.
