audio from webcam issue

Hi,
does anybody know how to acquire sound from a webcam mic?

the video works fine, I've compiled ffmpeg with lame support, no error
messages during export, but the video is mute.

I've got a few audio devices:
/dev/audio
/dev/audio1
/dev/dsp
/dev/dsp1

any clue?
