How to check if a thumbnail generated is black?

Hi - I wrote a program to automatically generate thumbnails from video
files, but I found that sometimes the thumbnails are black. It seems like
many Quicktime files have a few frames that are black in the first few
seconds of the clip. How do you check if a thumbnail generated by ffmeg is
black (or mostly black)?
