x264 pipe syntax for recent versions on Intel Mac

I was able to compile x264 with ffmpeg support on an Intel iMac after finding 
this patch announcement on the x264 mailing list.

Now instead of the "Illegal instruction" error when I run the following 
command, I get " could not open input file '-'". Is there a more appropriate 
command I should be using? This one has worked for a while with previous 
versions of ffmpeg and x264.

ffmpeg -i ~/video.mpg -f rawvideo -s 320x240 -| x264 -o ~/output.mp4 - 320x240
