oops, my bad.  i didn't do step 5.  however i still can't get it to 
work.  i've started from scratch 3 or 4 times now and it's always the 
same, there is no "wmv3" listed in ffmpeg -formats.  i triple checked 
that smtpe-vc1 is getting compiled into libavcodec.

[deploy@c17-gs-dev1 ffmpeg]$ nm libavcodec/libavcodec.a | grep wmv3
                 U wmv3_dc_scale_table
0000000000000000 D wmv3_decoder
0000000000000000 R wmv3_dc_scale_table
0000000000000000 D wmv3_decoder

after i make ffmpeg though, there is no wmv3_decoder symbol.
