Hi Mike.  Thanks for looking into this.  The instructions fail at step 7:

[deploy@c17-gs-dev1 build]$ cd /opt/build/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libvc1/
[deploy@c17-gs-dev1 libvc1]$ make
make: *** No rule to make target `vc13dhtab.o', needed by `libvc1.a'.  Stop.

As I said, this is Red Hat EL 4.
