There is a thread in dri-users about such problems in the mga driver, though disabling preemption didn't seem to fix them completely, just made them a bit less frequent. I also experienced lockups with the Savage driver after resuming from disk. I believe it's related to the AGP driver not resuming properly, because it only happens when running more demanding GL apps. So far it's just a guess though.
