Which driver and hardware are you using? Have you tried it with 2.4
kernels with better success? Please provide more information about what
tests you made.
One common problem with some drivers may be kernel preemption. What
happens if you compile your kernel without preemption? There is a thread
in dri-users about such problems in the mga driver, though disabling
preemption didn't seem to fix them completely, just made them a bit less
frequent.
I also experienced lockups with the Savage driver after resuming from
disk. I believe it's related to the AGP driver not resuming properly,
because it only happens when running more demanding GL apps. So far it's
just a guess though. Could your lockups be related to power management?

Motherboard: Soyo KT600 Dragon Plus w/ 1GB RAM
OS: Fedora Core 2 (with kernel 2.6.6-1.435)
Drivers tested: I've tried it with both the stock drivers from fedora and
from ATI (versions 3.9.0)
