The "operation not permitted" error seems odd:
[15:34] yalu@dionysos:~$ ls -ld /dev/dri/
drw-rw-rw- 2 root root 72 Jul 25 15:22 /dev/dri/
[15:35] yalu@dionysos:~$ ls -l /dev/dri/
ls: /dev/dri/card0: Permission denied
[15:40] root@dionysos:~# ls -l /dev/dri/
total 0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 226, 0 Jul 25 15:19 card0

Permissions seem ok, yet I can't access the card??
Well, no, they don't seem ok. /dev/dri is a directory, but you don't have permission to list its contents. I would think that the permissions should be 755, and that's in fact the value I got in mine. Give it a try
chmod 755 /dev/dri
