sometimes X does not automatically load the kernel modules for the DRI.
to get around this, add these lines to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:

/sbin/modprobe agpgart
/sbin/modprobe radeon

That way the modules will get loaded by your startup scripts so you
know they will be loaded, rather than relying on X to load them.

Alternatively you can manually load the modules before you start X, but
that can get tedious.

modprobe module_name to load a module
modprobe -r module_name to unload a module.
