Release status

Hi,

Loadsa last minute fixes in!
But I think everyone's about ready with fixing now... so what I still  
have pending:

- splash (Andy offered a nice pic. I think that'll be used)
- release notes (small text file this time, we do it all in html on  
site)
- release number update in code (last commit typically)

I think we can go for total freeze in thursday afternoon (Azores time  
:-). OK?
