This is a limitation of VSS, which can't store either symbolic or "hard" 
links like Unix filesystems support.  Thus, the Unix clients have
no special support for symbolic links, and the POSIX APIs we use
automatically follow them to the target file or directory, so the
target files or directories are added.  VSS was originally designed
for DOS filesystems, which don't support links, file permissions,
user or group ownership, and many other filesystem features.

One work-around, if you intend on adding both the link and the target
of the link to your VSS database, is to add only the target first, and
create a shared file or folder where the symbolic link exists.  This
won't be preserved on a Get Latest Version (the files on your local
disk won't include the link), but it will save you database storage
space.
