I'm taking down an NT4 server that currently has the VSS db and SOS server. I am installing Windows 2003 server (new install), and am wondering what the current recommendations are for installation. My developers all user Visual Studio .NET 2003.
It is my understanding that MS has stopped shipping the JVM, and SourceGear doesn't support SOS 3 server on Windows 2003 Server because of this (though I might be able to get it to work).
What version of VSS software should I install on the server?
Should I download the beta of 4 and install it? how close is it to being ready for prime time?
Does SOS 4 transparently support SOS 3 clients?
Does SOS 4 address the limitation of only being able to work with one NIC?
Or should I do what I've done in the past when I can't get SOS to work on a server for some reason: Put SOS server on a pre-Windows 2003 box and have the SOS server grab files through the network?
(A recent corporate mandate requires us to update all servers to Windows 2003 and all clients to XP by June, so I need this to work on Windows 2003 sometime soon.)
Any comments are welcome.
Regards,
Dave
