Choosing A Webhost:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied: msg#00031

Subject: failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied

Hello –

*** My (immediate) problem ***

In browsing into the topmost directory of my repository via ViewVC (version 1.0.4) I encounter this traceback:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/var/www/viewvc/lib/viewvc.py", line 3665, in main
    request.run_viewvc()
  File "/var/www/viewvc/lib/viewvc.py", line 253, in run_viewvc
    import vclib.svn
  File "/var/www/viewvc/lib/vclib/svn/__init__.py", line 25, in ?
    from svn import fs, repos, core, delta
  File "/usr/local/subversion_1.4.3/lib/svn-python/svn/fs.py", line 19, in ?
    from libsvn.fs import *
  File "/usr/local/subversion_1.4.3/lib/svn-python/libsvn/fs.py", line 5, in ?
    import _fs
ImportError: /usr/local/subversion_1.4.3/lib/svn-python/libsvn/_fs.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied

A colleague of mine believes this is telling us that, when loaded into memory, one of the segments of the shared object is inaccessible.

*** What I’ve already investigated **

o Ownership of the viewvc installation, as well as the the Subversion repository, have all been set to apache:apache, under which httpd is running.  I am also running svnserve as apache.  Likewise, all file permissions have been set to 777.

o I have also changed the ownership of the offending shared object to apache:apache.

o I think the true problem may actually be responsible for some warnings in the build output of the ‘make swig-py.’  Here’s a representative example:

./subversion/bindings/swig/svn_delta.i:98: Warning(453): Can't apply (svn_delta_editor_t const *EDITOR,void *BATON). No typemaps are defined.

There is no file named typemaps.i anywhere in the source directory, although there are frequent attempts to import it.  Should there this file already exist?

I appreciate any assistance any of you may be able to offer.  I’m running a newly-compiled Subversion 1.4.3; the Python version is 2.3.4, the version already included in RH 4 EL EMT64.

Thank you!

Mike Lund
