It is likely that it's a font problem on your machine. I actually just
fixed a font problem on mine that made *everything* look a hell of a lot
better. The trick is to get the DPI right, and you do that by adding the
'DisplaySize' option to the 'Monitor' section in the X config file.
When I did this all of my fonts suddenly got a bit bigger because X
thought my display was bigger than it actually is.
