I am using xpdf 3.00-13 from 64-bit amd64 Debian sarge and it renders
fine for me there. I don't see anything that looks like a missing
pixel row on the bottom nor do I see anything that looks like
artifacts in the images to me. I have a number of the unicode fonts
installed and use a UTF-8 locale.

As you mentioned, possibly you are seeing the effects of missing
fonts?
