Choosing A Webhost:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation. more...

Subject: RE: Integration with Microsoft Access 2000

We use Vault as a repository for a Microsoft Access 2000 Project
approximately 30Mb/1000 objects in size. (For those who don't know a
project uses SQL Server to store its data and is not the "usual" way people
think of Access. If you're looking at deploying an Access product in the
future I'd recommend a project/MSDE combination rather than a standard MDB.
While the MDB stands alone you'll have fewer problems deploying the Access
project/MSDE combination into a multi-user environment. I believe that is
Microsoft's path for the future as well.) I haven't a clue as to how Vault
would handle with a standard MDB.

The only bad experiences I've had have been (what I now know is the
standard) the pain and humiliation of learning not to rename in a source
controlled environment unless you're using the native SCC client. Inside of
Visual Studio renaming a file seems to lose control of that file and its
replacement; inside of Access I began to have permanent problems checking
files in and out. A few minutes work with the Admin client and it was "all
better."

It seems to be a check-out/edit/check-in environment as well. You can try
other methods but I've had extreme reliability issues. You also want to
ensure that you set your local machine to get latest at start up. I haven't
found a way to use the native Vault client efficiently. Your luck may be
better.

The biggest problem I've had is with the Data and Misc. Objects object.
That object gets checked out fairly often but is done behind the scenes so
you might not even be aware that you have it out.

I used Visual SourceSafe for a while with Access 2000 and ran into similar
problems as with Vault. I don't believe the problems are with either source
code control platform - I believe they are inherent in the architecture of
Access 2000. Honestly I was going to attempt to continue to use VSS for my
A2K project while we worked with Vault inside of VS.NET but I tired of
switching SCC providers and took the plunge. Despite being unsupported it
has worked well for us.

I have five people who access the project regularly. 4 are developers
including myself, the last is my boss. Performance wise we have no issues.
After taking care not to rename any objects in the database we've had no
major problems either.

Good luck.

Subject: [vault-list] Integration with Microsoft Access 2000

I'm looking for a source control system for a 5-developer team using
Microsoft Access 2000. I've seen some rather disturbing references to
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe - would sourcegear Vault be a sensible choice
for us? I haven't seen any reference to Access in the documentation or on
the site.
