Hey,
I'm sure there are people out there, maybe like you,
that have had their share of bad experiences with P4.
I'm not saying that P4 is perfect. I've only been
formally using it myself for about 2 years and can
only speak from my own experience.
I think what my larger point here is that just because
_you_ personally do NOT have to "add users to
ClearCase" doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't
need to be done. A UNIX/Windows group needed to be
created and assigned ownership of the VOBs no? Folks
that want to use ClearCase have to get added to these
groups, no? In a large enough organisation that can be
quite a hassle. I happen to like the fact that I do
*PERSONALLY* have control over mostly everything in
the configuration of P4 (which really isn't that
much). With ClearCase, I had to interface with a LOT
of people to get things to work.
To fully support an enterprise environment for
ClearCase you need a small army of people. Sysadmins,
Network people, Release/SCM Engineers. To support P4,
you need about 1/5th of that for about the same amount
of users and code.
In the time that I've used P4 I've never once had the
server go down or had to call the support people.
Here's to hoping this trend continues...
Cheers,
- Rene M.
