You could make the directories read-only as well, and then change the
permissions while Darcs is working. Besides, I think most tools at
least warn you before proceeding to overwrite a read-only file, so
that would be better than nothing.

I certainly agree that this would be a useful feature. I have a
colleague who kept doing global searches in his IDE and not noticing
that the first result was the version in current rather than the
working version...
