upcoming release: msg#00015

Subject: upcoming release
I'm thinking I'll do a point release in a day or two. I think I will call
this release 1.0rc1, in the hope that changing the name will change my
behavior (I'll be less likely to make risky changes) and at the same time
perhaps flush more bug reports out, for bugs that people were ignoring and
hoping would go away.

So this is advance notice for any of you on the devel list, in case you
have something that you think should make it into darcs 1.0.

At this point, I've been getting sufficiently few complaints that I decided
the few things remaining on the pre-1.0 TODO list really must not be that
important. Some (like the --clean option for optimize) really aren't
important (although they'd be nice) and could also be safely added to the
stable branch after 1.0. Others (like reading base64 encoded patches)
aren't useful to me (since I've only once ever received such a patch), and
I assume aren't too important to anyone else, or they would have told me.

So this is your notice to let me know if I've let anything fall through the
cracks.

As an aside, perhaps I should mention that I'd really like to have another
"full time" darcs developer, if any of you are interested in the job. By
"full time", I mean someone who doesn't have another project taking up
time, and will spend a fairly large amount of time on darcs. I greatly
appreciate the contributions many of you have made to darcs, but it would
be nice to have somebody I know will be spending time on darcs either in
the fixing bugs or adding features realm, while for most of you I don't
know if you'll just drop off the map at any given time. Anyhow, if any of
you are interested in spending more time on darcs, just let me know. You
don't necesarily have to have much experience with either darcs coding or
haskell coding (although either would be a plus).
