Choosing A Webhost:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation. more...

Hi Peter,

Hello,
I am a new member of a team that has not been used to using any version control software. I have been trying to make a case for version control and have been given permission to look at free version control options which I might recommend to the team.
We are an Oracle development shop - with the database and application server both on Linux servers. However the developers are using Win2K clients. My primary interest is in maintaining versions of PL/SQL packages, for which the source would be stored as text files.
There is no money in the budget for proprietary licensed version control software, and since I am only "playing" for now, I used my local client machine to set up my repository. This is less than ideal but I was hoping it would at least allow me to do a test.
I tried downloading and using Tortoise VCS and encountered several problems. It seems that after creating a repository, I cannot check out individual files from within that repository, but only directories that are in the root of the repository directory. Also when I did check out one of these directories into a sandbox, the individual files inside the directory did not appear in the sandbox.
Because of these problems I was ready to give up on TortoiseVCS as a feasible tool for our use but thought I would ask first whether perhaps I am missing something. Does anyone have any suggestions for me ?

Keep in mind that CVS does NOT work like SourceSafe etc. I am not the
expert on either, but the big difference with CVS is that you as
developer have a full copy of a project (sandbox) you change what is
needed in a certain file, run update on that file (or files) to ensure
that your changes don't conflict with anyone elses (if they do then you
need to resolve those conflicts) and then do a commit of these files.

By the way, you can also do a commit/update on a higher level
folder/directory (just in case you forgot which files you actually
modified - obviously this doesn't happen to good developers :-P .

I found this PDF very useful:

See you
Werner

Thanks
