Choosing A Webhost:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Subject: RE: newbie questions

The problem is not in TortoiseCVS itself but rather that you need to understand how CVS version control works.

The trick is not to think of your repository as a place to store files, but rather a place to store projects.  Each project can then have files and folders.  In CVS terminology, projects are known as modules and your local copy of a module is a sandbox.  You add files and folders to this sandbox, and then commit the changes to the module on the server.  Once this is done developers can then update their sandbox to download the latest changes from the server.

You should never need to modify the repository yourself; all changes are done from your sandbox via TortoiseCVS.

There is extensive documentation in the user guide (start -> programs -> TortoiseCVS -> user guide), it should be able to answer most of your questions and get you up and running with CVS.

Cheers,

Andy

Subject: [TortoiseCVS] newbie questions

Hello,

I am a new member of a team that has not been used to using any version control software. I have been trying to make a case for version control and have been given permission to look at free version control options which I might recommend to the team.

We are an Oracle development shop - with the database and application server both on Linux servers. However the developers are using Win2K clients.  My primary interest is in maintaining versions of PL/SQL packages, for which the source would be stored as text files.

There is no money in the budget for proprietary licensed version control software, and since I am only "playing" for now, I used my local client machine to set up my repository. This is less than ideal but I was hoping it would at least allow me to do a test.

I tried downloading and using Tortoise VCS and encountered several problems. It seems that after creating a repository, I cannot check out individual files from within that repository, but only directories that are in the root of the repository directory.  Also when I did check out one of these directories into a sandbox, the individual files inside the directory did not appear in the sandbox.

Because of these problems I was ready to give up on TortoiseVCS as a feasible tool for our use but thought I would ask first whether perhaps I am missing something.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me ?

Thanks

Peter Hartgerink
